Brave New Traveler Ian McKenzie launched this “Online Travel Magazine for the 21st Century,” in 2006 and we’ve been using it daily since we discovered it – guaranteed to inspire and inform with a great mix of travel news and blogs, and wonderfully organized. Click here to read Christina Heyniger’s Complete Guide to Volunteer Tourism published July 2007 by Brave New Traveler.

Matador is “a place to share travel stories & photos, meet people in the places you’re going, get info and advice from experts, become a paid travel writer, collaborate with local organizations, and get inspired everyday with articles about sustainability and world culture.” We think Matador’s easy-to-navigate site definitely delivers on the inspiration and is well on its way to building a very cool community of global citizens. Check out their Map feature to see where Matador writers are hanging out – everywhere from Kazakhstan to Madagascar.

TravelersPoint Great resources for the entire travel community. Traveler forums, travel planning guides, travel blogs, and new wiki travel guide; Travellerspoint has everything the modern traveler needs to plan a trip or learn more about a destination.

Startbackpacking.com With an emphasis on budget travel, Greg Rodgers’ site links to a cool assortment of travel blogs and entertaining tips for backpackers.

Tour Dust lets responsible adventure travelers book trips and accommodation online.  We love them for finding on their own the wonderful Silver Salmon Creek Lodge in Alaska, where Off the Radar founder Christina Heyniger spent all her childhood summers!

GeckoGo

GeckoGo is “participatory community” of independent travelers.  The GeckoGo website offers suggestions on places to visit and when to travel – we love the map feature and services link for searching hotels, flights and purchasing insurance.

World Nomads keeps you traveling safely

Usha Lama at Third Eye Travel is fantastic. She’s quick, reliable and finds the best fares to Bhutan, China, India including Sikkim and Darjeeling, Mongolia, Nepal, Southeast Asia. 510-487-9010 in the US toll free: 800-456-3393.

For Central and South America, the boys at Solimar Travel are our perennial favorites. Call them at their offices in the quirky Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington, D.C. at 202-518-6193.

Websites We Love

We discovered Feed the Rat - www.feedtherat.com through a reader in Geneva, Switzerland, and were immediately hooked. Feed the Rat is a “community of skiers, climbers, paddlers, base-jumpers, mountain-bikers, cave-divers, surfers, snowboarders and adventurers from most of the other arenas.” The website is a log of their activities and also a great resource for people planning their next out-there adventure. If you’ve always wanted to plan your own expedition – polar, desert, mountains – you name it – look into their Expedition Consultantcy Service. They’ll help you organize and execute your dream expedition.

Backcountry Blog – Backcountry Adventure from Backcountry.com customers, Gear Reviews and Outdoor Industry scuttlebutt for Backcountry addicts

CDGRA – The Colorado Dude and Guest Ranch Association has a membership of 30 ranches in Colorado, all offering unique opportunities to experience the American West.

Blogs We Love

Traveling the Green Way – Earth friendly ideas for your travels.

Travelanthropist – Similar to the mission behind Xola and Off the Radar, the Travelanthropist passion is to bring greater awareness to travel that transforms both the traveler and the community, people & place traveled.
