Arctic Grail

Sir William Edward Parry and Roald Amundsen were just two of the larger-than-life characters competing to be the first to the North Pole in the 1800s.  It's a history book but you'll probably forget that as you tear through this dramatic tale of polar expeditions.  A Canadian newspaperman before he began writing longer works, author Berton brings a journalist's flair for reportage and readability to his famous book. Parry's repeated attempts to discover the Northwest Passage - a sea route through the ice of the Arctic Ocean along the ...

Marathon Through the Namibian desert

If cold weather and polar expedition aren't for you - how about a marathon through the Namibian desert?  Adventure-Racing is organizing a 42 km run through the Namib, April 8th-15th.  Runners must be totally self reliant, carrying their own water and food - no Gatorade stops in the desert!  But we think dashing alongside ostrich and springbox more than make up for that!

COMPETITOURS

Adventure travelers have a reputation for fearlessness and at times, let's be honest, a competitive nature. That's why when we heard about COMPETITOURS new trip/race we thought the Off the Radar community would want to know about it. Join the race when you assemble your team and be prepared to be spontaneous  - you won't know what European cities you will be heading to until you complete each challenge.  And don't expect to just be navigating the subway in London, you might also find yourself visiting a KGB museum, kayaking down rivers, or tasting beers at microbreweries. The challenges are taped by the teams ...

Cruising Greenland’s Fjords

Before he reached the Pole, Robert Peary made two trips to Greenland, dog sledding across the harsh Arctic landscape. This in-between island, technically part of North America but politically associated with Denmark and an Arctic nation in it's own right has a long and diverse history - well worth exploring. Board a Hurtigruten cruise that begins in Iceland and circles around the fjords of Greenland, navigating through majestic icebergs and icy waters filled with seals and Minke whales.  The journey starts in Reykjavik, weaving around the coast of Greenland stopping Igaliko, "The Abandoned Fireplace," dedicated in 1780 to St. Nicolas the protector of Sea-faring people, and ...

Skiing and Dogsledding to 90 Degrees North

Try traversing the North Pole by dogsled, ski, or snowshoe when you travel withPolarExplorers.   Although the company offers a range of trips from three-day excursions to family trips, the trip we've been dreaming about ever since we met guide Annie Aggens in Norway in November 2008, is the North Pole Last Degree Ski Expedition.  Not for the faint of heart - or pocketbook! - these supported expeditions lead you from 89 degrees North latitude to the geographic North Pole (at 90 degrees). The North Pole is located in the middle of the Arctic Ocean, and the sea ice ...
