Congratulations to Andrew Meyerson for quickly naming the historic earthquake that rocked Alaska on March 27, 1964.  The quake was the second largest of the 20th century and the largest ever to occur in the northern hemisphere.

Think you recognize the high altitude lake shown in this photo provided by Questrails?  We’ll give you a hint: it’s bisected by the international border between India and China and famous for its beauty among trekkers in this region.

Volunteer Trips Go Surfing in Lobitos, Peru and Climbing on Nicaragua's Ometepe
Surfing in Lobitos
WAVES for Development, a new not-for-profit association based in Peru has the admirable mission of making the world a better place through surfing.  Join WAVES to surf and serve local youth by teaching English through art, or about the environment while surfing.

With over 40 members in 8 countries, WAVES (Water, Adventure, Voluntourism, Education and Sustainability) is establishing affiliates in the US and Switzerland to fund the expansion of its programs across Peru.  February 17th through March 1st marks the pilot of its Educational Surf and Adventure Voluntourism Programs in the rural coastal community of Lobitos.

Working with local schools, the Peruvian Sport Institute and the Peruvian Surfing Federation, WAVES aims to grow programs along the entire coast of Peru using a generous donation of 400 surfboards from Global Surf Industries. Look for more volunteer opportunities over the summer.

Connect with Communities in Nicaragua
Surf the waves of the Pacific Ocean, climb the volcanos on the island Ometepe and get your hands dirty with Comunidad Connect near San Juan Del Sur in Nicaragua.  Comunidad Connect guests have the choice of helping with the construction and installation of water filters in rural homes, volunteering with a sports park, or supporting recycling programs.  On your days off savor the views and observe the wildlife of Ometepe, fly through the trees on a zip-line tour or learn Spanish.  Living with a host family during your stay guarantees the full immersion experience.

Collaborating with local real estate gurus, Comunidad Connect’s co-directors Roman Yavich and Jon Thompson have developed the flagship initiative - Community REfund (where the RE stands for Real Estate) to alleviate poverty and bring together local and international communities. Comunidad can customize your experience to mix service and adventure to suit your specific interests.

For more information on their programs check out www.ComunidadConnect.org and www.CommunityREfund.org

Treetops Hotel – Aberdares Kenya

Despite the current turmoil, we thought this might be a nice time to remind people about the beauty of Kenya. In the Aberdares, an isolated volcanic range in central Kenya, relatively few tourists venture.  Frequent and heavy rain can sometimes make the roads impossible.  But for those who make the journey, there are some fine rewards – if you go stay in the stunning Treetops Hotel, a structure originally built in 1932 in a massive fig tree overlooking a large waterhole.

This hotel in the trees serves copious glasses of Pimms and even offeres delicate midnight wake up calls with a small silver bell to alert guests when one of the Big 5 is at the watering hole.
