Kayaking through Cliffs in the Calamian Islands
Kayaking to hidden lagoons accessible only through small holes in looming cliffs is among the many delights for guests who join owner-operated EcoFirst Adventures on a trip through the Calamian Islands of the Philippine province of Palawan.
Those who’ve visited the Philippines can attest that this island archipelago made up of 7,107 islands in the western Pacific Ocean offers a magical combination of towering limestone cliffs, underwater and land caves, thermal lakes, hot springs, jungles and mangrove forests for modern explorers. Amy and Eric Williams founded EcoFirst Adventures in 2004 with a passion for protecting and nurturing such exotic environments.
On the favorite “Incomparable Calamian” itinerary you’ll spend your days exploring the bluest of blue seas, and nights camping in high style with large walk-in tents, fresh linens, and a separate lavatory/shower tent on uninhabited white sand beach islands. And while the EcoFirst Adventure staff will be cooking up fresh and fantastic meals for the five nights you’re camping, the other four nights are spent in hotels – one of them an open-air retreat on the edge of the South China Sea complete with a chef and in-house masseuse.
As Amy says, “the Philippines is a place we truly treasure, the islands are beautiful, the sand is sugar white, and the water is blue as can be. The people are very friendly and welcoming. And, most importantly, the Philippines has escaped a lot of the trappings of modern tourism. The towns we visit are there for the locals, not for tourists. There aren’t shops with tons of unnecessary souvenirs, there aren’t chain restaurants – there are just people living their lives and opening their communities to the people who do visit.” It’s a very magical place.
